### Seahawks Seek Solutions Amid Offense Struggles
The Seattle Seahawks are grappling with a host of issues this season, but there's optimism in the camp that solutions could be found even without waiting for the draft. NFL analyst Robert Mays believes the Seahawks can make adjustments now to bolster their faltering offense.
The Seahawks, currently holding a 4-5 record, are experiencing mixed results in their offensive game. On one hand, they are getting commendable performances from key players. Second-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is close to surpassing his 2023 yardage total, and DK Metcalf, despite a knee injury that sidelined him for two games, remains tied for 12th in the league in receiving yards. However, these impressive individual stats are overshadowed by overarching team struggles.
Leading the league in false starts (17) and sitting second in offensive holding penalties (19), Seattle’s discipline issues are alarming. Their quarterback, Geno Smith, is facing severe challenges as well. With 10 interceptions this season, he is one of the most intercepted QBs, further hindered by an offensive line that ranks fourth in allowing sacks.
Seattle’s 8.9-yard average on third-down attempts, the longest for any NFL team since 1980, exacerbates their offensive woes. While quick fixes for the offensive line are unlikely, Mays suggests an increase in play-action calls could help mitigate these struggles. He notes that Geno Smith leads the league in passing yards but is significantly under-utilizing play-action, sitting 25th in attempts for such plays.
By incorporating more play-action passes and a few additional run plays per game, Mays argues that Seattle could ease some pressure on their exposed offensive line. This change, he believes, could yield tangible benefits without overhauling the team’s established approach.
Geno Smith’s turnover problems came to a head during a rough game against the Rams, where he threw three interceptions, including a notable 103-yard pick six. This game has contributed to Smith's concerning season total of 10 interceptions against 11 touchdowns. Yet, Mays pointed to an interesting stat: Smith’s 10 picks come from exactly 10 turnover-worthy plays, indicating an unusual level of bad luck.
Smith’s ability to minimize turnovers will be crucial as the Seahawks look to improve their standing. There's cautious optimism that with slight strategic tweaks like increased play-action, the second half of the season could see a turnaround for Seattle's embattled offense.
