### Steelers Switch Focus from Jonnu Smith to Free Agent Gabe Davis
After discussions to acquire Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith fell through, the Pittsburgh Steelers are now setting their sights on free agent Gabe Davis in their quest for additional receiving talents. As per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Davis is scheduled to visit Pittsburgh on Thursday.
The decision to pivot comes after Smith, who had expressed willingness to renegotiate his contract with Miami, chose to stay with the Dolphins. Smith had an outstanding season, breaking team records with 88 receptions and 884 receiving yards, along with a Pro Bowl selection, proving to be a valuable asset for Miami. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, affirmed Smith's desire to remain a Dolphin, citing his significant contributions to the team and his deep-rooted association with Miami, including his college days at FIU.
The Steelers initially considered Smith due to his connection with their offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, who previously coached Jonnu Smith during their time with the Tennessee Titans and later reunited with him at the Falcons.
In search of a new option, Pittsburgh is now entertaining the possibility of bringing Davis on board after his recent visits to the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers. Davis, formerly with the Jacksonville Jaguars, was released on May 7 after a knee injury cut his 2024 season short. Despite the setback, Davis, 26, has a noteworthy career with 163 catches, 2,730 yards, and 27 touchdowns during his tenure with the Buffalo Bills, displaying a potential high-impact addition for the Steelers.
As Pittsburgh transitions from the trade talk centered around Smith, they hope Davis could offset their recent loss of George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, providing both experience and versatility to their receiving corps moving into the new season.
