The Pittsburgh Steelers emerged as one of the winners of the 2024 NFL Draft, according to general consensus. Steelers' GM Omar Khan and assistant GM Andy Weidl showcased their drafting prowess, solidifying the offensive line and adding key playmakers to the roster.
In their quest to bolster the offensive line, the Steelers made significant strides by selecting Washington offensive lineman Troy Fautanu and West Virginia center Zach Frazier. Both prospects were hailed as instant starters, while South Dakota State guard Mason McCormick added valuable depth to the unit.
To address their needs at wide receiver, the Steelers added Michigan's Roman Wilson to the lineup, whose presence is expected to make an impact. Additionally, the selection of North Carolina State's Payton Wilson strengthened their linebacker corps, potentially landing them one of the best linebackers from this year's draft class.
Despite the overall positive reception, CBS Sports' Chris Trapasso gave the Steelers a "B+" grade, citing concerns with Fautanu's lack of strength as the reason for the downgrade. However, Trapasso's opinion on Fautanu's power was debatable, as many experts praised his strength and physicality displayed on tape. NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger even highlighted his "tidal waves of power" prior to the draft.
Nevertheless, Fautanu is widely regarded as a top offensive lineman and is expected to make an immediate impact, solidifying the Steelers' offensive line. Frazier, who fills the void at center, was a crucial addition considering it was an area of need for Pittsburgh during the offseason.
Completing the trio of offensive line acquisitions is Mason McCormick, who brings depth and the potential to become a future starter at guard. His versatility and athleticism make him an excellent candidate to push for a starting role in the coming years.
Interestingly, Trapasso's lowest draft grades were assigned to wide receiver Roman Wilson and defensive lineman Logan Lee. However, despite the less glowing review, the Steelers' overall draft performance received commendation from experts and enthusiasts alike.
Though Trapasso's "B+" grade was considered relatively low, it was still tied with the Baltimore Ravens for the lowest score in the AFC North. In comparison, the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals received higher grades of "A-" for their draft performances.
The Steelers, undeterred by the mixed assessment, are confident in their selections and remain optimistic about the impact their new acquisitions will have in the upcoming season. Only time will tell if this draft class will prove Trapasso's concerns wrong and ensure the Steelers' continued success on the field.
