The Pittsburgh Steelers have begun their preparations for their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers, facing a familiar situation as quarterback Russell Wilson remains limited in practice. Wilson is still recovering from a calf injury that has hindered his participation in practices.

Coach Mike Tomlin, addressing the media during his weekly press conference, confirmed that Wilson would not be a full participant and that the team was readying a game plan that featured backup quarterback Justin Fields. Tomlin emphasized that they would closely monitor Wilson's progress throughout the week and make a decision based on his level of participation and quality of play.

Tomlin dismissed any speculation about Fields earning the starting job outright, stating that he was not engaging in hypotheticals and that the focus was on the next game. The pecking order and depth chart would remain unchanged until Wilson is fully healthy and ready to return.

While the quarterback situation remains in the spotlight, there have been other injury concerns for the Steelers. Linebacker Tyler Matakevich, known for his contributions to special teams, suffered a hamstring injury in the previous game against the Denver Broncos and has been placed on the Reserve/Injured List. Matakevich, who recently rejoined the Steelers after four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, will be unable to play for the foreseeable future.

In addition to Matakevich, wide receiver Ben Skowronek and tight end MyCole Pruitt have also been added to the Reserve/Injured List. Skowronek, who was initially drafted by the Los Angeles Rams, joined the Steelers after a trade with the Houston Texans. Meanwhile, Pruitt, signed as a free agent this offseason, is dealing with a knee injury, and his status for the upcoming game remains uncertain.

In related news, the Steelers promoted tight end Rodney Williams from the practice squad to the 53-man roster on Wednesday to address the team's depth at the position.

Tomlin stated that the team would incorporate players based on their abilities to participate in preparations. For new and young players, early participation would put them under serious consideration. As for the experienced players, some leniency would be given, depending on their roles and performance during practice.

Rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson, who has been limited in practice, is still working his way back from an ankle injury sustained during training camp. Tomlin expressed optimism about Wilson's progress and expected him to have an increased workload in the upcoming week.

Guard Isaac Seumalo, who suffered a pectoral injury before the start of the season, is also inching closer to a return. However, Tomlin emphasized that they would wait until Seumalo is fully available before making any decisions regarding his involvement in the game.

Turning to the Chargers, their quarterback Justin Herbert did not participate in practice on Wednesday due to an ankle injury. His status for the game remains uncertain.

Both teams are dealing with several injuries and will need to carefully manage their rosters leading up to game day. The full injury reports for both the Steelers and Chargers can be found below.
