In an offseason marked by significant changes at the quarterback position for the Pittsburgh Steelers, General Manager Omar Khan revealed on Monday that the team may not be done making moves just yet. Despite already signing Russell Wilson and Kyle Allen, as well as trading for Justin Fields, Khan left the door open for the possibility of drafting a quarterback during this week's draft.
While speaking at a press conference, Khan acknowledged that taking a quarterback in the first round of the draft was unlikely. However, he emphasized that the team would explore any opportunities to improve the quarterback room as they have three newcomers currently signed to one-year deals.
"We've made some significant changes to our quarterback group, and I wouldn't close the door on anything," Khan stated. "Although it's not realistic to expect us to select a quarterback in the first round, we have to be open to improving the room. We have three guys on one-year deals, so we need to explore all possibilities."
The Steelers currently hold the 20th overall pick in the draft. Beyond that, they also possess a second-round pick, two third-round picks, a fourth-round pick, and two sixth-round selections. This array of draft picks provides the team with ample opportunities to address various needs on their roster.
With quarterback being a critical position, it is clear that the Steelers are not taking any chances. The addition of Russell Wilson, Kyle Allen, and Justin Fields has brought an element of competition to the quarterback room. However, with the newcomers all signed to one-year contracts, there remains a need for a long-term solution at the position.
The NFL draft offers the Steelers a chance to potentially secure a young quarterback who can develop and potentially become the future face of the franchise. While any quarterback drafted this year may not have an immediate impact, the team is looking ahead with a long-term perspective.
As draft day approaches, the Steelers, under the guidance of General Manager Omar Khan, will carefully evaluate their options. While a quarterback selection in the first round seems unlikely, the team will utilize their subsequent draft picks to further strengthen their roster and potentially find their quarterback of the future.
It remains to be seen who the Steelers will ultimately select in the draft, but one thing is certain - the team is committed to revitalizing their quarterback room and ensuring a competitive future for the franchise.
