The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to kick off their 2024 NFL training camp at Saint Vincent College, with several key storylines to watch. The biggest question facing the team is the search for a WR2 on the roster. Although George Pickens is expected to be the top target for the team's likely starting quarterback, Russell Wilson, the depth chart beyond that remains uncertain.
The Steelers have a variety of wide receivers vying for the WR2 spot, including Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin III, and Roman Wilson. None of them have solidified themselves as the clear choice for the position. However, the team's run-first identity and the TE-friendly offense implemented by coach Arthur Smith could lessen the need for a true No. 2 wide receiver. That being said, the Steelers may still explore options in training camp, considering the limited availability of impact players in the free agent market.
While Wilson is the favorite to start at quarterback, he still has much to prove after a turbulent stint with the Denver Broncos. Although his numbers improved in his second year with the team, his QBR of 50.7 was the second lowest of his career. Wilson, who will turn 36 during the season, expressed optimism during minicamp about finding the fountain of youth in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are banking on Wilson's rejuvenation and hope to find success after recent playoff disappointments. However, if Wilson fails to deliver and minimize mistakes, the team's backup quarterback, Justin Fields, could be waiting for his shot.
The most impactful offseason addition for the Steelers is linebacker Patrick Queen. With the team's division heavily reliant on ground battles, Queen's arrival provides an upgrade at the position. The Steelers have been searching for a replacement for Ryan Shazier and came close last year with the signing of Cole Holcomb. However, Holcomb's season-ending knee injury has left his return date uncertain. Queen's presence not only enhances the linebacking corps but also offers depth and flexibility as Holcomb continues his rehabilitation. Queen's toughness and skill set perfectly complement veteran Elandon Roberts' work ethic and edge, as well as rookie Payton Wilson's explosiveness.
As the team's focus on the ground game persists, the Steelers also face a decision regarding their running backs. With the team declining Najee Harris' fifth-year option, it opens up the possibility for Benny Warren to have an even more prominent role in the offense. Warren had an explosive 2023 season, amassing four touchdowns on 149 carries for 784 yards, along with 61 receptions for 370 yards. Although he played 49% of offensive snaps, Warren accounted for just 32% of the team's red zone carries.
On the other hand, Harris recorded his third consecutive 1,000-yard season and scored eight touchdowns in 2023. However, his involvement in the passing game decreased with only 29 receptions for 170 yards on 38 targets. Harris did excel in the red zone, making 68% of the team's rushing attempts there, though he only averaged 2.5 yards per carry compared to Warren's 3.9 in that area.
With training camp underway in Latrobe, the Steelers will have the opportunity to further evaluate their wide receivers, quarterback situation, and running back battle. The outcomes of these competitions will significantly impact the team's offensive game plan for the upcoming season.
