**Steelers Acquire Edge Rusher Preston Smith from Packers**
The Pittsburgh Steelers made a significant move at the trade deadline by bringing in edge rusher Preston Smith from the Green Bay Packers. Known for his impressive tally of 68.5 career sacks over 155 regular-season games, Smith brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Steelers' defense.
Smith's athletic journey began in his childhood, where he was encouraged by his mother to participate in multiple sports. Growing up, he played basketball and baseball in addition to football. According to Smith, this diverse sports background contributed to his overall athletic development. "My mom was trying to keep us active," Smith shared. "Have a lot of dimensions to our life, not being a one-sport athlete, playing a lot of sports and just having a lot of different athletic ability."
His high school career at Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia, laid the foundation for his future success. As a product of the Jaguars' football program, which has produced multiple NFL players since its inception in 1996, Smith has the most NFL appearances of any graduate from the school. Notable alumni include Bruce Irvin, who was once a teammate of Smith's new quarterback, Russell Wilson, and Chicago Bears' defensive end Montez Sweat.
Smith's college career at Mississippi State showcased his significant talents. As a senior, he earned recognition for his outstanding performance, being named First-Team All-SEC by SEC coaches and Second-Team All-SEC by the Associated Press. Smith's senior year statistics were remarkable, including 48 total tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, nine sacks, two interceptions, five forced fumbles, and two blocked kicks.
Drafted by Washington in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Smith has demonstrated incredible durability and consistency throughout his NFL career. Over ten seasons, he's missed just one game, illustrating his commitment to maintaining his physical health. "My body is my investment," Smith stated in an interview. His dedication has paid off, as he remains a key player even at the age of nearly 32.
Beyond the regular season, Smith has also made his mark in the playoffs, with 4.5 sacks in eight postseason games. Notably, he recorded two sacks in a decisive 2019 playoff victory against the Seattle Seahawks, bringing down his now-teammate, Russell Wilson.
The Steelers are undoubtedly looking forward to seeing what Smith can bring to their defense, especially evident from his proven track record and consistent performance.
