After a long recovery from two stress fractures in his back, star closer Devin Williams is finally ready to make his 2024 debut for the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers have reinstated Williams from the 60-day injured list and made room for him by designating right-hander Janson Junk for assignment.

Williams underwent an MRI during Spring Training which revealed the extent of his injury. Following a period of rest and rehabilitation, the right-hander has been making progress and recently completed four scoreless innings in his minor league rehab outings.

Despite Williams' absence, the Brewers' relief corps has remained effective, ranking third in bullpen ERA heading into Sunday's action. Trevor Megill has excelled in the closer role, posting a 2.41 ERA and recording 20 saves in Williams' absence. However, with Williams returning to the ninth-inning duties, Megill will now move back into a setup role.

The Brewers have also recently acquired righty Nick Mears from the Rockies in a trade, further bolstering their relief corps for the remainder of the season. This trade, coupled with Williams' return, adds depth and strengthens Milwaukee's bullpen as they aim to maintain their first-place standing.

Williams has been a key asset for the Brewers since his MLB debut in 2019, showcasing his talent with a 1.75 ERA and an impressive 40.5% strikeout rate over 200 1/3 innings since the start of the 2020 season. Although he has faced challenges with his walk rate and velocity, Williams has consistently excelled at inducing soft contact and missing bats.

Janson Junk, who was designated for assignment to make room for Williams, has struggled during his time with the Brewers. With a 5.87 ERA in 15 1/3 innings and seven appearances, Junk has also spent most of the 2023 season in the minors. However, his recent success with a 2.55 ERA in Triple-A Nashville could make him an attractive option for teams in need of bullpen depth.

It remains to be seen whether the Brewers will explore a trade involving Junk before the July 30 deadline or if he will clear waivers and accept an outright assignment. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Junk's future, the focus for the Brewers is now on Williams' return and how his presence will further strengthen their bullpen as they look to secure a successful season and potentially make a postseason run.
