According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Sonos is gearing up to release an updated version of its Roam wireless AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth speaker in June. Additionally, the company will be introducing a new app specifically designed for its portable speakers. This move comes in response to reported Bluetooth issues with the speaker, which have prompted Sonos to make necessary hardware adjustments.
The forthcoming app will not only support the Roam speaker but will also be compatible with Sonos' rumored high-end headphones, set to debut alongside the Roam. Priced at $449, these headphones are expected to be unveiled in June as well.
However, users of the Move 1 and 2 and the first-generation Roam may have to exercise patience as the company reportedly grapples with software issues, making it difficult to incorporate support for these devices.
The original Roam, which received positive reviews for its performance, did have some limitations, such as the inability to pair over Bluetooth for stereo sound. Users voiced concerns about the long-term durability of the battery.
The updated Roam is anticipated to feature similar topside touch controls seen in the Era 100 and 300 speakers, enhancing user experience and convenience.
Beyond the Roam and headphones, Sonos has apparently set its sights on other product offerings to bolster its hardware revenue. This includes plans for a TV set-top box, as well as updated iterations of the Sub, Era 100, and Sonos Arc soundbar.
With the upcoming launch of the updated Roam speaker, the introduction of a dedicated app, and the highly anticipated high-end headphones, Sonos aims to expand its product lineup and cater to the growing demands of its customer base.
