The Giving Pies, a small Black- and woman-owned business in San Jose, experienced an outpouring of community support following the cancellation of a large order for 4,000 mini pies for Tesla. In response to the abrupt cancellation, over 300 customers showed up at the bakery last weekend to show their support.
Owner Voahangy Raseterinera expressed gratitude for the unexpected wave of support, with donations pouring in from across the country and even abroad, from places like the Netherlands and Sweden. Tesla CEO Elon Musk personally intervened, pledging to make amends for the canceled order.
A Tesla manager offered to pay and reimburse Raseterinera for the $2,000 worth of supplies she had purchased for the original order and extended a new catering opportunity for 3,600 mini pies for a women's day celebration in March. Despite the generous offer, Raseterinera had to decline the catering job due to a shortage of supplies caused by the increased business from the community support.
While expressing willingness to work with Tesla in the future, Raseterinera remains focused on fulfilling current orders, including preparations for Pi Day. The heartwarming response from the community has not only helped The Giving Pies recover from the setback but has also highlighted the power of support and solidarity for small businesses in challenging times.
