In a heartbreaking turn of events, Skye Blakely, a top contender for the women's Olympic gymnastics team, has been forced to withdraw from the U.S. Olympic trials. The 19-year-old athlete from Texas suffered a severe injury to her right Achilles tendon during podium training in Minneapolis.

USA Gymnastics confirmed on Thursday that Blakely will not be able to compete in the trials due to her injury. The incident occurred during floor exercise training, where she sustained the injury while performing a double layout. Blakely was visibly devastated, being carried off the competition floor with her face in her hands and later wheeled out of the arena by medical staff.

Blakely had displayed exceptional performance during her training leading up to the trials. Just earlier this month, she secured a second-place finish in the all-around at the U.S. Championships held in Fort Worth, finishing behind the renowned Simone Biles. Her excellent performance had solidified her as a near-lock for the Paris team, especially after debuting a valuable skill, the Cheng, on the vault.

Speaking about her performance in Fort Worth, Blakely expressed her determination to prove herself on the competition floor. Unfortunately, history seemed to repeat itself, as she faced a similar setback at the Tokyo Olympic trials in 2021. Back then, she had to withdraw at the last minute due to an elbow injury sustained during warmups.

Blakely's impressive track record includes representing Team USA at the two most recent world championships, where she won gold medals in the team event and qualified for beam finals on both occasions. Her withdrawal from the trials now opens up opportunities for other talented gymnasts, including Kayla DiCello, Jordan Chiles, and reigning Olympic floor champion Jadey Carey, to shine and secure their place on the Olympic team.

Blakely's absence will undoubtedly be felt during the trials, as she was expected to be a strong contender for a spot on the team. The gymnastics community sends their well wishes to Skye Blakely for a speedy recovery as she navigates through this challenging setback.
