Shohei Ohtani's Postseason Pitching Potential Raises Questions

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has left the possibility open for Shohei Ohtani to appear as a pitcher in a postseason game this year. While earlier in the season this may have seemed improbable, Roberts believes in keeping a margin of possibility and not ruling out any scenarios.
During an interview with SiriusXM MLB Network Radio, Roberts stated, "I think that you should always leave some margin, a crack in the door for any possibility. If things line up and there's a need, and the game, [Ohtani's] body, everything is telling us that it makes sense in that situation, great. It would be storybook."
This development comes as a boost for the Dodgers, who have been plagued by pitching injuries throughout the season. Roberts emphasized that it would be unfair to assume Ohtani's return as a pitcher in the playoffs, but the mere prospect of it is significant for the team.
Ohtani recently took an important step in his recovery from right elbow surgery by throwing off a mound for the first time. While the plan was for him to only face live hitters in practice situations before the season ends, team officials had previously stated that Ohtani would not pitch at any point this year. However, Roberts hinted that there might be a chance for Ohtani after all.
"Shohei is on board," Roberts confirmed. "We'll just continue his rehab process, and I wouldn't put it past him to have an eye on [pitching in the postseason]. We'll just see how it plays out."
While Ohtani's potential return as a pitcher brings excitement to fans, it also raises questions about the impact he could have in the playoffs. Ohtani's ability to both pitch and hit at an elite level has made him a standout player in Major League Baseball, and if he were to pitch in the postseason, it would undoubtedly add another layer of intrigue to an already intense playoff race.
However, it is important to note that no concrete plans have been made regarding Ohtani's role as a pitcher in the playoffs. The decision will ultimately depend on factors such as his recovery progress, team needs, and game situations.
Regardless of whether Ohtani takes the mound in the postseason or not, his return to action will be highly anticipated by fans and could provide a much-needed boost to the Dodgers' pitching staff. Only time will tell if this potential storybook comeback becomes a reality for Ohtani and his team.
