In a heartbreaking turn of events, actress Shannen Doherty, known for her roles in "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Charmed," tragically passed away at the age of 53, just a day after finalizing her divorce from her estranged husband, Kurt Iswarienko. According to People, Doherty had filed paperwork to waive spousal support on Friday.
The former couple had reportedly agreed to a "default or uncontested dissolution" of their marriage. Iswarienko, 50, signed off on the paperwork on Saturday, the very day Doherty succumbed to her battle with stage IV cancer. The divorce process had been underway since April 2023 when Doherty filed for divorce amidst allegations of infidelity, which Iswarienko denied.
Doherty had accused Iswarienko of having an affair during their 12-year marriage, revealing that she discovered the infidelity in January 2023, just before undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor. The circumstances surrounding their divorce added an immense emotional burden to Doherty's already challenging health journey.
Throughout her life, Doherty had displayed immense strength in facing various health challenges. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, she underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation, ultimately achieving remission in 2017. However, in February 2020, she revealed her battle against Stage 4 breast cancer.
Amidst her ongoing health struggles, Doherty had to contend with a contentious divorce process. In court documents, she claimed that Iswarienko had been delaying the divorce and withholding spousal support until her death. She expressed frustration over a lack of financial information about Iswarienko's photography career.
Iswarienko vehemently denied Doherty's claims, asserting his desire to finalize the divorce in September 2023. He had offered Doherty a settlement, which she rejected due to concerns about his artistic works and income disclosure.
Doherty, in her court documents from June, requested $15,343 in monthly spousal support, $9,100 to cover legal fees, and $11,800 for additional expenses related to the legal proceedings. She emphasized that her ability to work had been compromised due to her battle with cancer, resulting in a significant decline in her earnings.
Following Doherty's untimely passing, her friend Tara Furiani criticized Iswarienko in a heartfelt LinkedIn post. Furiani expressed her sadness over the impact of the divorce on Doherty's life and accused Iswarienko of causing profound pain and suffering by not showing compassion to his dying wife.
Doherty had been married three times in her life but did not have any children with any of her ex-husbands. In a poignant episode of her podcast, she reflected on her belief in love despite her previous failed marriages and took responsibility for some of the issues in her relationship with Iswarienko.
The world mourns the loss of Shannen Doherty, a talented actress whose strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit inspired many. Her final moments were marked by the completion of her divorce, a bittersweet ending to a tumultuous chapter in her life. May she rest in peace.
