A recently released police search warrant has shed light on the tragic case of Nex Benedict, a nonbinary Oklahoma student who passed away a day after a high school bathroom altercation. The warrant, filed in Tulsa County District Court on Wednesday, detailed the harrowing moments when Benedict's mother found them in distress, prompting a call to 911 as the 16-year-old struggled to breathe with eyes rolled back and hands curled.
Paramedics rushed Benedict to the hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries. The warrant disclosed that following a fight on February 7 involving a transgender student and three older girls, Benedict sustained bruises on their face and eyes. Although able to walk out of the bathroom after the incident, they were later hospitalized due to complaints of a headache from hitting their head on the floor.
At the hospital, Sue Benedict, the teen's mother, chose not to press charges but sought police intervention to address issues at the school. The school district confirmed that the altercation lasted less than two minutes and was broken up by students and staff members. The family has launched an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Benedict's death, declining further comments on the search warrant.
Police investigators took 137 photographs at the school, collected samples from the bathroom where the fight occurred, and gathered records of the students involved. While the initial warrant indicated a search for evidence in a felony murder, preliminary autopsy results suggest Benedict's death was not directly caused by injuries from the fight.
Owasso school officials have cooperated with the ongoing investigation and highlighted privacy laws regarding student records. Tulsa County District Attorney Stephen Kunzweiler expressed condolences to the grieving family and urged against speculation, emphasizing the importance of allowing law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation.
A Sunday vigil in Owasso is planned to honor Nex Benedict, as authorities await toxicology and further autopsy results to provide clarity on the situation.
