Sao Paulo, the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere, is stepping up security measures ahead of South America's first-ever NFL game, set to take place on Friday. Concerns about safety were raised by players from the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers, who will be facing off at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo.

Eagles players expressed their apprehension about security in the city, prompting the Sao Paulo state government to take immediate action. The government announced that specialized civil and military police battalions will be deployed to reinforce security during the game. Police officers will be stationed on streets, trains, and at subway stations, hotels, and tourist attractions.

"To guarantee the safety of the players, the military police will reinforce the number of personnel upon arrival of the delegations at the Guarulhos Airport and escort the teams to their hotels, training sites, and the stadium," stated the Sao Paulo state government. Additionally, a thorough sweep will be conducted at the stadium prior to the game.

Brazil has been ranked as the 17th most dangerous country in the world in terms of murder rate, according to Statista data from 2023. However, Sao Paulo state officials reassured that the local homicide rate is four times lower than the national average, comparable to that of California and lower than Washington, D.C.

The upcoming NFL game has also raised concerns regarding potential crimes, leading players to be advised against leaving their hotel and not to walk on the streets while holding cellphones. Darius Slay Jr., from the Philadelphia Eagles, expressed his reservations about playing in Brazil on his podcast, highlighting the high crime rate and potential security risks. As a precautionary measure, he advised his family not to travel to Brazil for the game.

Both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers are scheduled to depart for Brazil on Wednesday. The first Week 1 Friday evening game since 1970 will mark a significant milestone for the NFL, as the league expands its reach to South America. With enhanced security measures in place, authorities aim to ensure the safety and well-being of the players, as well as provide a secure environment for the historic event.

As players and fans eagerly await the kickoff of this landmark NFL game in Sao Paulo, the city's intensified security preparations seek to alleviate concerns and ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
