The San Jose Sharks have announced the signing of center Macklin Celebrini, their first-overall selection in the 2024 NHL Draft, to a standard entry-level contract. General Manager Mike Grier expressed excitement about Celebrini's potential, both on and off the ice.
At just 18 years old, Celebrini showcased his skills in 38 NCAA games for Boston University, amassing an impressive 64 points, including 32 goals and 32 assists. His outstanding performance earned him a second-place finish in points-per-game in the NCAA, trailing only his current teammate Will Smith. Celebrini also ranked second in goals and third in total points. Remarkably, he became only the fourth player in collegiate history to achieve a 30 goal-30 assist campaign.
The young center demonstrated his consistency throughout the season, failing to register a point in just six games. Notable highlights include a four-assist game in November, a 10-game point streak consisting of nine goals and 13 assists, and eight multi-point outings in his first 11 games. Celebrini played an instrumental role in guiding BU to the Beanpot Final, the Hockey East Final against Boston College, and the NCAA Frozen Four semifinal.
Celebrini's exceptional performance did not go unnoticed, as he received several year-end awards and honors, including the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, bestowed upon college hockey's top player. Remarkably, Celebrini became the fourth freshman in NCAA history and the youngest player ever to receive this accolade. He was also recognized as the National Rookie of the Year and the Hockey East Rookie of the Year, among other achievements.
Prior to his collegiate career, Celebrini spent a season with the Chicago Steel in the United States Hockey League (USHL). There, he dominated the league, leading in goals, points, game-winning goals, and power-play goals. Notably, Celebrini broke the league's record for most points by a U17 player in a single season and scored five goals in a single game, becoming the first player in Steel history to achieve this feat. His exceptional performance earned him the USHL Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Forward of the Year awards.
Celebrini's talent extends beyond the North American stage, as he represented Team Canada at the 2024 World Junior Championship, leading his team in scoring with eight points in five games. He was also instrumental in helping Canada secure a Bronze medal at the 2023 U-18 World Junior Championship and was named one of the top three players on the team for both tournaments.
Standing at six feet tall and weighing 190 pounds, the Vancouver native is set to make his mark in the NHL after being selected by the San Jose Sharks as the first overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. With his exceptional skills, hockey sense, and numerous accolades, Celebrini's future in the league looks promising.
The Sharks organization is thrilled to have Macklin Celebrini officially join their ranks for the upcoming 2024-25 season. Fans eagerly await his debut on the ice and anticipate the impact he will have on the team.
