In a latest escalation of tensions between Russia and the United States, Moscow summoned the U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Lynne Tracy, on Thursday and issued a stern warning, threatening to expel American diplomats in response to what it claimed was American interference in Russia's domestic affairs. The move comes amidst accusations of funding "anti-Russian" non-profit organizations and spreading disinformation about Russia's upcoming presidential election and its military operation in Ukraine.

Russia's Foreign Ministry released a statement accusing Washington of attempting to meddle in the internal affairs of the country. It vowed to firmly and decisively suppress any subversive actions and disinformation campaigns pertaining to the elections and the ongoing military operation. The statement further emphasized that retaliatory measures could include the expulsion of U.S. embassy officials allegedly involved in such activities.

The deteriorating relations between Russia and the United States have witnessed reciprocal expulsions of diplomats in recent years, as the bilateral ties have reached an all-time low, particularly after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The latest development underscores the increasing hostility between the two nations.

According to Russia's Foreign Ministry, during the meeting between Ambassador Lynne Tracy and Russian officials, the U.S. was urged to halt its funding of three non-profit education groups that were believed to be promoting values and attitudes not aligned with Russian society. It is important to note that Moscow consistently views Western-backed NGOs and civil society organizations with suspicion, often accusing them of training potential revolutionaries, claims that have been consistently rejected by the West and the groups themselves.

The escalating tensions and threats of expulsions highlight the deepening divide between Russia and the United States. The Russian government's decision to summon the U.S. Ambassador and issue such a warning underscores the increasing vulnerability of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

As tensions continue to mount, it remains to be seen how the United States will respond to these latest accusations and threats. The international community will closely monitor the situation, emphasizing the need for diplomacy and constructive dialogue to avoid further escalation between these influential global powers.
