The San Francisco Giants have been dealt with a significant blow as they announced that Blake Snell, the reigning National League Cy Young winner, will be placed on the 15-day injured list. The left-handed pitcher is sidelined with a left adductor strain, with the placement retroactive to April 23.
The decision to scratch Snell from his scheduled start comes amidst what has been a frustrating start to the season for the talented pitcher. Snell, who had a prolonged spell in free agency before signing a short-term deal with the Giants, has struggled to find his form since making his debut on April 8. In his first three starts, he has given up 15 earned runs in just 11 2/3 innings pitched.
Furthermore, Snell's strikeout rate has significantly dipped this season, standing at 20.7% compared to his career rate of 29.6%. While some of Snell's struggles could be attributed to poor luck, with a .410 batting average on balls in play and a 39.6% strand rate, his underlying performance metrics suggest that a correction was due.
The Giants have not provided a timeline for Snell's return, but the placement on the injured list indicates that he is expected to miss at least a couple of turns through the rotation. Snell now joins Robbie Ray, Alex Cobb, and Tristan Beck on the injured list, leaving the Giants with a limited rotation.
With the absence of Snell, the Giants are left with Logan Webb, Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, and Keaton Winn as their viable starting options. For the time being, the Giants may opt for a bullpen game, especially with an off-day tomorrow and another on Monday, potentially allowing them to manage with a four-man rotation until next weekend.
To address the temporary void in the rotation, the Giants have called up reliever Landen Roupp from Triple-A Sacramento. Roupp, who has starting experience in the minors, could be a viable option to fill the starting spot. Another potential option could be recent acquisition Mitch White, who was acquired from the Blue Jays. Additionally, Sean Hjelle, Kai-Wei Teng, Daulton Jefferies, and top prospect Carson Whisenhunt are all potentially in consideration.
The length of Snell's absence and his subsequent performance upon return could have an impact on his potential opt-out decision. The left-hander signed a contract with the Giants that guarantees him $62 million, with certain amounts deferred to future years. The decision to stay or opt-out will depend on Snell's ability to regain his dominant form and prove himself once he returns to the mound.
Last year, Snell showcased his brilliance with a 2.25 ERA for the San Diego Padres, earning him the prestigious NL Cy Young award. However, with his slow start and the injury setback, Snell's future remains uncertain, and his health and performance will be closely monitored in the months ahead.
