The issues began shortly before 3 p.m. Eastern Time, with users flocking to Downdetector to report the outage.
A spokesperson for Reddit attributed the problem to a bug introduced during a recent update to the site. By 4:43 p.m., the company announced via email that they had implemented a fix and were working to restore full functionality. An earlier update from Reddit’s official social media account at around 4 p.m. had acknowledged the issue, simply stating, "Yes. We're working on it."
Downdetector, which tracks service disruptions via user reports, confirmed that the outage impacted those trying to use both the website and the mobile application. The service noted a significant spike in user complaints starting just before 3 p.m.
Reddit boasts 73 million daily users and over 100,000 active communities, according to figures shared earlier this year. This is not the first time the platform has faced technical issues; it also experienced performance degradation on November 5th, Election Day in the United States. Despite identifying the problem quickly, it took several hours for Reddit to fully resolve the issue, as noted in their incident report from that day.
