### Red Sox Acquire Ryan Noda from Angels for Cash Considerations

The Boston Red Sox have added a new player to their roster by acquiring infielder/outfielder Ryan Noda from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash considerations. Both clubs confirmed the trade, which occurred after the Angels designated Noda for assignment.

To make room for Noda on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox have transferred outfielder/designated hitter Masataka Yoshida to the 60-day injured list. Additionally, Noda has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester, where he will begin his tenure with the Red Sox organization.

Noda, 29, initially emerged as a standout player after being selected by the Oakland Athletics from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Rule 5 Draft over a year ago. He primarily played first base for the Athletics in 2023 but also contributed in the outfield corners. In 495 plate appearances, he hit 16 home runs while maintaining a high walk rate of 15.6%, albeit with a significant 34.3% strikeout rate. His performance resulted in a .229/.364/.406 batting line, good for a 122 wRC+.

In spite of his high strikeout rate, Noda's on-base ability and power echoed his previous minor league stats. For instance, during his 2022 season with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate, he posted a .259/.395/.474 line, accompanied by 25 home runs and a 16% walk rate.

However, Noda struggled at the beginning of the 2024 season, producing a .128/.242/.198 batting line by May 2nd, which led to his demotion to the minors. He found his rhythm in Triple-A thereafter, hitting 22 home runs with a 19.9% walk rate and a 30% strikeout rate over 447 plate appearances.

The Athletics placed him on waivers in November, allowing the Angels to claim him. Despite his continued minor league performance, his batting average on balls in play (.224) has contributed to a less impressive .148/.364/.270 line in 2024, though his 20.1% walk rate and 34.4% strikeout rate remain consistent.

For the Red Sox, this acquisition addresses their pressing need at first base following a season-ending injury to Triston Casas. Multiple players, including Rafael Devers and Kristian Campbell, have been considered for the role, but none have solidified the position.

With Noda's addition, the Red Sox gain a player experienced at first base with a history of major league success. By observing his performance in Worcester, the team can evaluate whether he merits a call-up to the majors in the near future.
