In a recent trade agreement, the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates have struck a deal, exchanging right-hander Quinn Priester for second base prospect Nick Yorke in a one-for-one transaction. The Red Sox, who already have a vacancy on their 40-man roster, have opted to send Priester to Triple-A Worcester, while Pittsburgh has assigned Yorke to their top affiliate in Indianapolis.
Priester, 23, has struggled in his major league appearances over the past two seasons, posting a 6.46 ERA across 94 2/3 innings. Despite his challenges, he was once considered one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, with evaluators praising his curveball during his time in the minors. With a five-pitch mix, including a sinker, slider, four-seam fastball, curveball, and changeup, Priester will look to translate his minor league success into improved MLB results under Boston's player development staff.
Meanwhile, Yorke, a first-round pick by the Red Sox in the 2020 draft, has been making waves in the high minors. With solid offensive numbers, including a. 310/.408/.490 slash line and six home runs in Triple-A, Yorke is on the cusp of making his MLB debut. The 22-year-old has mostly played second base in his career but has some experience in left field as well.
Both players have been ranked in their respective organizations' prospect lists, with Priester touted for his potential and Yorke praised for his hitting abilities. As part of the trade, Yorke will not immediately join the MLB roster, but he could see action in the near future, providing the Pirates with a controllable bat for the next six-plus seasons.
The trade, reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan, signifies a strategic move for both teams as they aim to bolster their rosters with promising talent. Images courtesy of USA Today Sports.
