### Bowers Sets Record Despite Raiders' Struggles in Defeat to Dolphins
The Las Vegas Raiders faced a tough challenge on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, which ended in a disheartening 34-19 loss. The team's performance suggested that perhaps taking a rest during the bye week wasn't the optimal choice. The Raiders seemed unprepared, as the Dolphins dominated various aspects of the game.
While the offense showed some improvement, particularly in the passing game under interim offensive coordinator Scott Turner, other aspects of the team fell short. The defense, led by Patrick Graham, struggled significantly, allowing the Dolphins to convert 8 of 12 third downs, succeed on both fourth-down attempts, and score on three out of four red zone visits. This marked the fifth instance this season where the Raiders allowed more than 30 points in a game.
One of the few bright spots for the Raiders was rookie tight end Brock Bowers. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Georgia alum set a new NFL rookie tight end record with 13 receptions in a single game, totaling 126 yards and a 23-yard touchdown. This impressive performance brought his season totals to 70 receptions, 706 yards, and three touchdowns over just 10 games, setting several records for a rookie tight end.
Quarterback Gardner Minshew completed 30 of 43 passes for 282 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Bowers led the team in receiving, while running back Alexander Mattison contributed an additional three receptions for 50 yards. Despite these efforts, the Raiders' run game continued to falter, gaining only 60 yards on 16 carries, with 20 of those yards coming from wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.
The team’s defensive backs were also hit hard by injuries, forcing rookies and less experienced players into starting roles, which resulted in multiple communication lapses. Notably, Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith exploited these gaps, scoring two touchdowns, including a 57-yard catch-and-run where he was left wide open.
As the Raiders continue to grapple with their 2-8 record and the ongoing issues on both sides of the ball, they currently hold the fourth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. With quarterback being a significant area of need, this high draft position may offer a crucial opportunity to strengthen the team moving forward.
