In a recent documentary, Prince Harry opened up about his fears for the safety of his wife, Meghan Markle, and reflected on his ongoing battle against the British tabloid newspapers. The Duke of Sussex expressed concern that negative press could inspire an attack on Meghan, citing the potential dangers of knife or acid attacks.
During the ITV documentary Tabloids on Trial, Prince Harry spoke candidly about his worries, stating, "All it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff to act on what they have read. And whether it's a knife or acid, whatever it is, these are things that are of genuine concern for me. It's one of the reasons why I won't bring my wife back to this country."
The prince also revealed that his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, supported his battle against tabloid newspapers before her passing in September 2022. He shared that she was firmly behind him, saying, "She's very much up there, going 'see this through to the end.'"
Reflecting on a significant court ruling, Prince Harry described last December's judgment as a monumental victory. The ruling declared that he was the target of unlawful information gathering by Mirror Group Newspapers. He expressed his relief and gratitude, saying, "To go in there and come out and have the judge rule in our favor was obviously huge. But for him to go as far as he did with regard to, you know, this wasn't just the individual people. This went right up to the top...this was lawyers, this was high executives. And to be able to achieve that in a trial, that's a monumental victory."
In the documentary, Prince Harry also discussed the intrusions into his privacy and the toll it has taken on him. He confessed carrying feelings of "paranoia, fear, worry, concern," and a sense of distrust towards those around him. He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between the public's interests and what constitutes public interest.
Prince Harry's openness regarding his struggles with the tabloid media reflects his determination to fight against the damaging effects of sensationalized reporting. As he continues to speak up about the consequences faced by himself and his family, his resilience in combating intrusive media practices remains steadfast.
Overall, this documentary serves as a platform for Prince Harry to shed light on the challenges he and Meghan have faced and to advocate for responsible journalism in the public interest.
