President Biden criticized US lawmakers for their failure to approve emergency aid to Ukraine, attributing the fall of the city of Avdiivka to Russia over the weekend to this "absurd" inaction. The President warned that other towns in Ukraine may also collapse to Russian forces if additional support is not provided.
During a press briefing, Biden emphasized the importance of providing ammunition and funding to Ukraine, expressing his disappointment in Congress's delay in approving the aid. The President vowed to advocate for the necessary resources Ukraine needs to defend itself against Russian aggression.
Biden recently spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, assuring him that the US Congress would eventually approve the aid package. The fall of Avdiivka was described by a spokeswoman for Biden's National Security Council as a direct consequence of the lack of congressional action.
Efforts to replenish aid to Ukraine have been ongoing since August, with the Senate passing a $95 billion package that includes $60 billion allocated for Ukraine. However, disagreements between lawmakers, particularly regarding border security measures, have hindered progress in the House.
As Ukraine faces escalating tensions with Russia and a shortage of resources on the battlefield, the stalemate in Congress over aid funding continues. The two-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine is approaching on February 24th, further underscoring the urgency for support.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has demanded a negotiation with President Biden over the aid package, while the White House has been resistant. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has hinted at the possibility of deploying a discharge petition to accelerate the process and bring the bill to a vote.
