In a recent episode of the Steel Here podcast, Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson revealed the players he looks up to and studies in order to improve his game. Wilson, a third-round pick, mentioned Tyler Lockett and Hunter Renfrow as two wide receivers he has admired for a while. However, it was Puka Nacua's breakout rookie season that made Wilson add him to the list of players he emulates.

Nacua, a fifth-round pick, took the NFL by storm in 2023, setting all-time rookie records. With the Los Angeles Rams, he caught an impressive 105 passes for 1,486 yards and six touchdowns during the regular season. He continued his strong performance in the playoffs, adding another nine receptions for 181 yards and a touchdown.

Wilson expressed his desire to follow in Nacua's footsteps, admiring his athleticism, route-running ability, and physicality. The young Steelers receiver looks to emulate Nacua's sensational rookie campaign, hoping to make a significant impact in his first year in the league.

Interestingly, Wilson's admiration for Tyler Lockett and Hunter Renfrow provides insight into his own playing style. Despite Renfrow's smaller stature and limited slot role, Wilson appreciates his skill set. Lockett, on the other hand, is similar in size to Wilson but has found success both inside and outside as a receiver.

The question arises as to where exactly Wilson fits in the Steelers' lineup. While many believe he is best suited to play in the slot, he will also need to contribute on the outside. The extent to which Wilson can adapt and thrive in various positions will greatly impact his potential and ceiling in the NFL.

As it stands, Wilson has a chance to secure a starting role on the Steelers' roster from Day One. With only George Pickens being the notable competitor, Wilson will have to prove himself against experienced journeymen like Van Jefferson and Scotty Miller if the coaches deem him unready.

One notable similarity shared by Wilson and Lockett is their dedication to blocking, a skill often overlooked by wide receivers. Wilson's inclination towards excelling in this aspect of the game aligns well with the offensive system implemented by coach Arthur Smith.

While studying players may not be the most captivating topic, Wilson's choice of role models provides valuable insight into his own aspirations and playing style. However, it is worth noting that Nacua's taller frame, at 6'2", sets him apart from Wilson, who stands at around 6'0". Nonetheless, Wilson aims to learn from the route-running expertise displayed by Lockett and Renfrow, hoping to implement their techniques into his own game.

As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on Roman Wilson as he aims to make an impact on the Pittsburgh Steelers and establish himself as the next rising star at the wide receiver position.
