The news comes amidst speculation about player digit changes for the upcoming season.

It appears that safety Jalen Elliott was previously wearing number 41, but according to the team website, he still retains the jersey number. However, a recent switch by offensive lineman Tyler Beach from number 76 to 69 suggests that Elliott could potentially change his number as well.

Payton Wilson, known for his standout performance as college football's best linebacker in 2023, played with jersey number 11 in college. Unfortunately, that number was not available in the NFL, as it is currently worn by wide receiver Van Jefferson. It is unlikely that the Steelers would have granted Wilson the opportunity to don the number even if it were available.

Wilson's selection of jersey number 41 hints at the rich history associated with it. The last player to wear this number in-game was running back Qadree Ollison during the two games he was active in 2023. Notably, linebacker Robert Spillane also wore number 41 during his Steelers career before signing with the Las Vegas Raiders ahead of the 2023 season. Other notable players to have worn the number in Pittsburgh include cornerback Valentino Blake, end Lowell Perry, and halfback Johnny Lattner.

While Wilson ventures into the NFL with a new number, fellow rookies OT Troy Fautanu and WR Roman Wilson have also adopted jersey numbers different from their college days. However, center Zach Frazier will keep the same number, 54, which he has sported since high school.

Payton Wilson was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 98th overall pick in the draft. Despite injury concerns over his knees and shoulders, he was named the best linebacker in college football in 2023, which likely contributed to his high draft position.

With the preseason fast approaching, fans eagerly await the opportunity to witness Payton Wilson's skills on the field as he embraces his new jersey number with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
