In a setback for the Pittsburgh Pirates, right-hander Jared Jones has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a lat strain. The team's manager, Derek Shelton, provided some insight into Jones' injury, stating that it is a Grade 2 strain that will likely require him to refrain from throwing for the next two weeks.

Jones' injury comes as a blow to the Pirates, as the star rookie has played a significant role in the team's performance this season. If all goes well with his recovery, Jones could potentially restart a throwing program in two weeks' time, which may put him on track for a return in early August, based on previous timelines for similar injuries.

It is worth noting that the Pirates might allow Jones additional recovery time, both as a precautionary measure given his importance to the team's future and because the coaching staff has been actively managing the workloads of both Jones and Paul Skenes, another talented pitcher on the roster. Throughout the season, the Pirates have utilized a six-man rotation, with only two of Jones' 16 starts occurring on the standard four days of rest.

Jones' injury is a setback for the Pirates' postseason aspirations, as the team currently holds a record of 42-45 and remains four games out of a wild card spot. However, there is still time for the team to make a push for a playoff berth or consider selling at the upcoming trade deadline if their performance deteriorates.

In other news, reliever David Bednar, whose status is crucial to the Pirates' success, showed progress in his injury recovery. Bednar participated in a live batting practice session, indicating that he may not be far away from a minor league rehab assignment or a return to the active roster. Bednar has recorded 16 saves this season but has faced a challenging ERA of 5.17, though he has shown improvement since a rough April.

Meanwhile, the Pirates made a roster move by calling up right-hander Ryder Ryan from Triple-A, following Daulton Jefferies' placement on the injured list. Jefferies is suffering from discomfort in his right elbow, which is concerning given his history with multiple injuries and surgeries, including Tommy John procedures. Jefferies has struggled on the mound this season, posting a combined ERA of 9.82 for both the Pirates and the San Francisco Giants.

The Pirates will need to adapt in the absence of Jared Jones and monitor the progress of David Bednar's recovery as they navigate the remainder of the season. Their ability to overcome these challenges will be critical in their pursuit of a playoff spot.
