Philadelphia Flyers Sign Matvei Michkov to Three-Year Entry-Level Contract

General Manager Daniel Brière announced the signing, expressing excitement about Michkov joining the team at training camp in September.

Selected as the seventh overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, Michkov is considered a highly talented and skilled player with game-breaking abilities. The Flyers have been closely monitoring his development since the draft and are confident that he will be a significant contributor to their future success.

In a statement, Michkov expressed his happiness at officially becoming a part of the Flyers family. He shared that playing in the NHL has been a lifelong dream and thanked the Flyers management for their trust in him. At 19 years old, Michkov spent the majority of last season playing for HC Sochi in the Kontinental Hockey League. He demonstrated his scoring prowess by recording 19 goals and 22 assists for a total of 41 points in 47 games. Michkov's impressive performance led him to become the leading goal scorer for Sochi while ranking second in overall points.

Throughout the season, Michkov showcased his consistency and ability to contribute offensively with 11 multi-point games, several point streaks, and strong performances as an Under-20 player. He concluded the season with five goals and eight points in his last nine games.

Before joining HC Sochi, Michkov briefly played one game for SKA St. Petersburg. He later moved to HC Sochi and made a significant impact on their team, displaying his scoring ability and contributing 20 points, including nine goals and 11 assists, in 27 games. Additionally, Michkov played for SKA-Neva Saint Petersburg in the minor team, recording 10 goals and 14 points in 12 games before being called up to the KHL.

Hailing from Perm, Russia, Michkov has represented his country on multiple occasions, making a name for himself on the international stage. At the 2022 Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, he led all players in both goals and points, contributing eight goals and 13 points in five games to help Russia secure a gold medal. In the 2021 Under-18 World Junior Championships, Michkov's stellar performance earned him the Most Valuable Player award as he led all players in goals and points.

Although the 2022 World Junior Championships were canceled due to Covid, Michkov made an impact in the games he participated in, scoring three goals. His international success further solidifies his reputation as a top-tier player.

The signing of Matvei Michkov is undoubtedly an important step for the Philadelphia Flyers as they aim to strengthen their roster and build a competitive team.
