The Philadelphia Eagles have secured wide receiver DeVonta Smith's future with the team by exercising their option for a fifth season on his rookie contract and agreeing to a three-year contract extension. The extension is reportedly worth $75 million, with $51 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network and ESPN.
Smith, who had an outstanding collegiate career at Alabama, was a key contributor to the Crimson Tide's undefeated record and national championship win in the 2020 season. Recognized for his exceptional performance, Smith took home the prestigious Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and Walter Camp Award.
In the 2021 NFL Draft, the Eagles traded up to select Smith with the 10th overall pick. As a first-round draft pick, Smith's initial four-year rookie contract had a team option for a fifth season. By exercising this option before the May 2 deadline, the Eagles have ensured Smith a significant payday of $15.591 million for the 2025 season.
During the 2023 regular season, Smith showcased his talents with 81 receptions for 1,066 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games. Despite the Eagles' loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the NFC playoffs, Smith had an impressive performance, hauling in eight passes for 148 yards.
With a total of 240 receptions, 3,178 receiving yards, and 19 touchdowns in 50 regular-season games, Smith has established himself as a reliable and productive target for the Eagles. In addition, his postseason record includes 27 receptions for 405 yards and one touchdown in five games.
Smith's accomplishments in his first three seasons already surpass the receiving records of other notable Philadelphia players. He surpassed Jordan Matthews' 225 receptions from 2014 to 2016 and DeSean Jackson's 3,124 receiving yards from 2008 to 2010.
By extending Smith's contract, the Eagles have made a significant investment in securing his contributions to the team for the foreseeable future. As Smith continues to impress on the field, fans can look forward to witnessing his growth and impact in the seasons to come.
