The remarks were initially made in a New Yorker profile, and LuPone has since publicly addressed the situation on Instagram.

"For as long as I have worked in the theatre, I have spoken my mind and never apologized. That is changing today," LuPone wrote. She acknowledged that her comments were demeaning and disrespectful, expressing regret over her flippant and emotional responses during the interview. LuPone emphasized her desire to personally apologize to both McDonald and Lewis.

The apology comes after more than 500 Broadway performers signed a letter condemning LuPone's behavior. The letter, which included signatures from Tony winners such as Wendell Pierce, James Monroe Iglehart, and Maleah Joi Moon, as well as Courtney Love, criticized persistent failures in the community to hold powerful individuals accountable for disrespectful or harmful actions.

The controversy began last fall when LuPone, starring in "The Roommate," filed a noise complaint about the adjacent musical "Hell’s Kitchen," in which Lewis performed. Lewis responded on Instagram, accusing LuPone of bullying and racial microaggressions. In the New Yorker interview, LuPone disparaged Lewis, questioning her credibility as a Broadway veteran and calling her derogatory names. Additionally, LuPone commented on a rift with McDonald, who later expressed surprise during an appearance on CBS Mornings.

LuPone concluded her Instagram apology by reaffirming her commitment to the values of the theatre community, promising to take responsibility and make amends.

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to representatives for Lewis and McDonald for their comments on LuPone's apology.
