Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, visited Madison and Melia Reyes, two young sisters injured in a shooting incident during Wednesday's parade celebration. The sisters, ages 10 and 8 respectively, were shot in the legs and were recovering from surgeries at Children's Mercy hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Reyes family, who were attending the parade to celebrate the Chiefs' third Super Bowl championship in four years, expressed gratitude for the Mahomes family's surprise visit, which brought smiles to the girls' faces during a truly challenging time. The family thanked the community for their support as a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $185,000 to assist them.
Furthermore, Chiefs' tight end Travis Kelce donated $100,000 through his charity to support the Reyes family, while pop superstar Taylor Swift, Kelce's girlfriend, separately donated $100,000 to the family of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a victim who tragically lost her life in the shooting.
In response to the incident, the Chiefs are backing the KC Strong emergency response fund, which aims to provide support to the victims and their families, having raised over $546,000 to date for this cause. The fund also plans to aid violence-prevention and recovery organizations, as well as first responders.
Authorities have charged two juveniles in connection with the shooting, detaining them on gun-related and resisting arrest charges, according to a news release from the Jackson county family court division. The incident has brought attention to Missouri's gun laws, with the Giffords firearms safety group stating that the state lacks several key gun safety measures, contributing to its rank as the ninth-highest state in terms of firearm mortalities in 2021, per the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
