The Green Bay Packers concluded their joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday at Nitschke Field, leaving the field with a much better feeling compared to their lackluster performance in Denver last week. The Packers showcased an improved level of competition and execution, signaling positive developments for the team as they near the start of the season.
During the joint practice, the Packers demonstrated dominance on both sides of the ball for the majority of the session. While Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith intercepted Packers QB Jordan Love once (and nearly snagged a second interception), and Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson made noteworthy plays in the red zone, the Packers consistently displayed better overall performance than their previous joint practice in Denver.
The team took the opportunity to focus on the small details that determine the success of each play. Quarterback Jordan Love emphasized the importance of being locked in and paying attention to these nuances, highlighting the contrast between the somewhat sloppy practice in Denver and the improved execution against the Ravens.
The practice concluded with each team receiving three attempts at the two-minute drill, with all three Packers quarterbacks directing the offense to tie-breaking field goals. The Packers' defense stepped up, securing three consecutive stops. Rookie safety Evan Williams made a significant impact by grabbing his fifth interception of training camp, showcasing the team's commitment to maintaining a high level of play throughout practice.
One notable aspect was the Packers' first-string offense, particularly their efficient pass protection. Love enjoyed a comfortable pocket, rarely experiencing pressure from Baltimore's formidable defense. The offensive line, consisting of Rasheed Walker (left tackle), Elgton Jenkins (left guard), Josh Myers (center), Sean Rhyan (right guard), and Zach Tom (right tackle), showcased their ability to handle various pressures and protect the quarterback effectively.
Tight end Tucker Kraft, who had a long absence due to injury, made a remarkable return. Kraft caught five passes from Love, showcasing his speed and agility. His presence on the field was palpable, and his successful integration into the offense was evident.
The Packers' offense displayed impressive efficiency near the goal line, with Love successfully connecting with multiple targets despite facing a tough Ravens defense. Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, and Tucker Kraft were among the receivers who helped Love produce positive results.
On the defensive side, the Packers excelled in the front seven, consistently pressuring Lamar Jackson. Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, T.J. Slaton, and Devonte Wyatt all had impressive plays that disrupted the Ravens' offense. The defensive backfield also benefited from the strong front seven, as it allowed them to work on "plaster drills," maintaining coverage on receivers when the play breaks down.
With the preseason finale approaching, Head Coach Matt LaFleur will consider the joint practice performance before deciding the playing time for the starters. Given the overall positive display, it wouldn't be surprising if the starters were given the weekend off to prepare for the regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Packers as a whole expressed readiness for the upcoming season, with players like Christian Watson expressing confidence in their progress throughout training camp. As they wrap up their final days of camp, the Packers look forward to embarking on a promising season filled with growth and success.
