In a solemn news conference held on Friday, Orange County Sheriff John Mina revealed that his office is "confident" that 13-year-old Madeline Soto, who was reported missing earlier this week, is no longer alive. The devastating news was delivered to Madeline's mother, Jenn Soto, on Thursday night.

Detectives believe that Stephan Sterns, the boyfriend of Madeline's mother, is the prime suspect in this case. Sterns, who was arrested on unrelated charges on Wednesday night, has been named the primary suspect in Madeline's disappearance. Authorities suspect that Madeline was dead even before the day she went missing, as they believe she was never dropped off at her school on Monday morning.

According to Sheriff Mina, evidence indicates that Sterns discarded items, later identified as Madeline's backpack and school-issued laptop, in a dumpster in a Kissimmee apartment complex at 7:45 a.m. on Monday. Video footage also shows Sterns returning to his neighborhood with Madeline visible in the vehicle, although authorities assert that she was deceased at that time.

Officials are now focused on locating and recovering Madeline's body. Sheriff Mina emphasized that ongoing searches will continue, and every lead and piece of evidence will be thoroughly followed up on. The Sheriff's Office is working tirelessly to find Madeline, and undisclosed areas will be searched throughout the weekend.

Stephan Sterns was transferred from Orange County Jail to Osceola County on Friday morning. He has not yet spoken to anyone about his alleged involvement in the case. Additional charges may be brought against Sterns in the future, as investigations are still underway.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office has been collaborating with the Kissimmee Police Department on Madeline's case. Although the initial missing persons report was filed in Orange County, the case is now being handled by Kissimmee Police, as they believe Madeline was killed within their jurisdiction. The investigation will be treated as a homicide, and both agencies will continue their joint efforts in recovering Madeline's body.

Orange County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Maria Vazquez, expressed her condolences, stating that she was heartbroken to learn about Madeline's tragic death. Counselors are available for students and staff members who need support during this difficult time.

Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that may help the investigation. If anyone has video footage or recalls seeing Madeline Soto, Stephan Sterns, or his silver 2010 Lincoln MKZ with Florida tag IYLL82 on Monday between 1 and 2:30 p.m., they are encouraged to contact Crimeline at 800-423-8477.

The community is urged to stay united and offer support as the devastating loss of young Madeline Soto is mourned by her family, friends, and the Hunter's Creek Middle School community.
