The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a surge in norovirus cases with a positivity rate of 13.4% in the northeastern U.S. as of February 17. Norovirus, commonly known as the stomach flu, is highly contagious and can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain. Fox News medical contributor Dr. Marc Siegel highlighted the importance of hand hygiene to prevent the spread of the virus, which can be transmitted through contaminated food, water, and contact with sick individuals or surfaces. Siegel emphasized the risk of dehydration from norovirus symptoms, especially affecting the elderly, with approximately 100,000 hospitalizations yearly. While there is no specific medication for norovirus, Siegel recommended staying hydrated with electrolyte-rich fluids like Gatorade or Pedialyte. The CDC noted that norovirus testing in wastewater is not currently planned, despite its potential as a surveillance method. With no vaccine or pill available, maintaining proper hydration remains crucial in managing norovirus symptoms. For more health-related updates, visit www.foxnews.com/health.
