On Tuesday, the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills made significant trades, acquiring Davante Adams and Amari Cooper, respectively, signaling a potentially active few weeks before the trade deadline on November 5.
Following a gripping Monday Night Football showdown in Week 6, the New York Jets decided to bolster their offensive arsenal. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Jets secured Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders. In return, the Raiders will receive a conditional 2025 third-round pick that could escalate to a second-rounder if Adams achieves first- or second-team All-Pro honors and remains on the Jets' roster for the AFC Championship Game or the Super Bowl.
Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills strengthened their lineup by trading for Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns. The Browns traded Cooper along with a 2025 sixth-round pick, obtaining in exchange a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick from the Bills.
The trades could have immediate impacts on the teams involved. Davante Adams had expressed uncertainty about his future with the Raiders, and his wish to move was granted. As reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the 32-year-old Adams preferred to continue his career elsewhere. With his move to the Jets, Adams is once again teaming up with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a pairing that showed strong chemistry during their time with the Green Bay Packers.
Sports analysts have had mixed reactions to the trades. Bleacher Report’s Kris Knox awarded a B-plus to the Raiders for their dealings, noting that obtaining a Day 2 pick was a fair value for a player in his age-32 season. Knox highlighted that the timing of the trade was logical, given that Adams' trade value was unlikely to increase.
Conversely, the Jets received a C-plus for their part in the trade. Knox described the move as a calculated gamble to revive their 16th-ranked passing game but acknowledged the potential short-term benefits. The firing of former head coach Robert Saleh underscored the team's urgency, and the addition of Adams could be a component in a stronger offensive showing spearheaded by Rodgers.
As the trade deadline approaches, these deals could prompt a flurry of additional transactions across the league. Both the Jets and Bills are banking on their new acquisitions to propel them towards a successful postseason run, with Adams and Cooper set to showcase their skills in new team colors for the remainder of the 2024 season.
