Former Detroit Lions Players C.J. Moore and Quintez Cephus Reinstated by NFL After Suspension
In a recent development, the NFL has reinstated former Detroit Lions safety/special teamer C.J. Moore and wide receiver Quintez Cephus after their one-year suspension for violating the league's gambling policy. The news was reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Moore and Cephus were among four Lions players who were suspended back in April 2023 for gambling on football games, a clear violation of the NFL's strict policies. While the suspensions of Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill were initially set at six games (later shortened to four) for gambling on non-NFL games, Moore and Cephus faced indefinite suspensions as they had reportedly wagered on NFL games.
Following their suspensions, both Moore and Cephus were immediately released by the Lions, resulting in the termination of their contracts with the team. As a result, they are now free agents and can sign with any team that shows interest.
Moore, known for his contributions to the Lions' special teams, was highly valued by the team before the suspension. He consistently ranked in the top five in team special teams snaps over his four seasons with the Lions. Despite Detroit having a thin safety room, it remains uncertain if the team would consider reuniting with Moore or if he would have any interest in returning after the suspension and subsequent release.
On the other hand, Cephus had a less remarkable career with the Lions. As a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, he made 22 appearances and started six games during his three seasons with the team. Cephus accumulated 37 receptions for 568 yards and four touchdowns over that time. However, at only 26 years old, he may still attract some interest from other teams given his relatively low mileage in the league.
In addition to Moore and Cephus, the NFL has also reinstated three other players: wide receiver Shaka Toney, linebacker Rashod Berry, and defensive lineman Demetrius Taylor. While Berry and Taylor were previously on the Lions, they were not with the team at the time of their suspensions.
The reinstatement of Moore, Cephus, and the other players is a significant development for their football careers, as they now have an opportunity to continue their professional journey in the NFL. It remains to be seen which teams will consider adding them to their rosters, but their reinstatement marks a new chapter after a year of suspension.
