The New York Jets have released cornerback Tae Hayes from the team's roster after he was arrested in Alabama for possession of marijuana. The 26-year-old Decatur, Alabama native was booked in the early hours of Sunday morning and was subsequently released on a $300 bond less than two hours later.

According to the Trinity Police Department in Alabama, the possession charge is considered a second-degree misdemeanor. The Jets, however, have refrained from making any official comments regarding Hayes' release. A team spokesperson did acknowledge being aware of the situation on Sunday but declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing legal matter at hand.

Hayes, who joined the Jets' practice squad on October 3 last year, faced an uphill battle to secure a spot on the team. He got a chance to play a reserve role in a surprise victory over the Philadelphia Eagles before spending the remainder of the season on the practice squad. Following the conclusion of the season, Hayes signed a one-year contract to remain with the Jets.

Since making his debut in the NFL in 2019, Hayes has had stints with multiple teams including the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, and Carolina Panthers. Throughout his career, he has appeared in a total of 14 games.

As of now, it remains uncertain how Hayes' recent arrest and subsequent release will impact his future prospects in the NFL.
