**Giants Bench Daniel Jones, Promote Tommy DeVito as Starting QB**

In a significant move that caps months of speculation, the New York Giants have decided to bench Daniel Jones, promoting backup Tommy DeVito to the starting quarterback position. The decision was made after 10 games into the 2024 NFL season, as reported by CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones.

General manager Joe Schoen recently assured reporters that the decision was purely based on football considerations, dismissing any rumors that the demotion was intended to sidestep a potential $23 million injury payout. The 27-year-old Jones has struggled recently, going 3-13 in his last 16 starts with a 79.4 passer rating this year, ranking 32nd among qualified quarterbacks.

Initially, the Giants signed former Denver Broncos starter and Seattle Seahawks reserve Drew Lock as their No. 2 quarterback during the offseason. While Lock did make brief appearances in relief of Jones, it is DeVito who has emerged as the preferred fill-in starter under coach Brian Daboll. DeVito had previously gone 3-3 last season when he replaced an injured Jones.

"After evaluating and watching a lot of tape, that's the reason we are going with Tommy," Daboll said in a team statement on Monday. "Drew Lock will be the backup. This was a necessary move for us, and I'm looking forward to working with Tommy. He'll be ready to go against Tampa Bay."

DeVito, undrafted out of Illinois, has become a local fan favorite. Growing up in New Jersey, his rookie year performance included eight touchdowns to three interceptions as an emergency starter. The 26-year-old is set to make his 2024 debut in the upcoming Week 12 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jones, who signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension ahead of the 2023 season, has likely seen his last days as a Giants quarterback. His tenure has been marred by injuries, turnovers, and inconsistent support from his team. Despite a career year in 2022 under Daboll, where he drew Comeback Player of the Year consideration, Jones played only six games in 2023 before suffering a torn ACL, leading to an early end of his season with a 1-5 start.

Both Daboll and Schoen had openly considered acquiring a new starting quarterback after Jones’ injury-shortened season before deciding to give him another chance. However, their latest decision to start DeVito signals a new direction for the Giants.
