The New York Giants have reached an agreement with linebacker Isaiah Simmons on a one-year deal, according to a source close to the situation. The 25-year-old is set to return to the Giants after being acquired in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals last August for a seventh-round pick.

In his first season with the Giants, Simmons played in 17 games, starting four of them. He showcased his versatility by contributing 46 tackles, a sack, and an interception returned for a touchdown. Giants' general manager Joe Schoen expressed his satisfaction with Simmons' performance, calling him a "good addition" to the team.

Despite not having a defined position, Simmons has started a total of 41 games throughout his career. He has demonstrated his adaptability by playing as a safety, inside linebacker, nickel cornerback, and even as an edge rusher for both the Giants and Cardinals.

As an unrestricted free agent, there were uncertainties surrounding Simmons' return, particularly due to his strong rapport with former Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, who recently left the team to join the University of Michigan as their defensive coordinator. However, the Giants believe that Simmons can still be a valuable asset in new coordinator Shane Bowen's defensive scheme, which is expected to involve fewer blitzing and man coverage strategies – areas where Martindale previously utilized Simmons' natural athleticism.

Simmons, a highly-touted prospect out of Clemson, was selected eighth overall in the 2020 draft for his impressive size, speed, and playmaking ability as a safety. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 238 pounds, he showcased his exceptional athleticism by running the 40-yard dash in just 4.39 seconds at the NFL combine.

Despite his unquestionable talent, Simmons has yet to find a permanent position at the NFL level. While he moved between safety and linebacker during his time with the Cardinals, Simmons primarily played as a linebacker for the Giants.

With his return to the Giants, Simmons will have another opportunity to showcase his versatility and contribute to the team's defensive efforts in the upcoming season. As the Giants look to bolster their defensive roster, the addition of Isaiah Simmons is undoubtedly a significant step forward.
