The New England Patriots have secured their linebacker, Jahlani Tavai, for the foreseeable future. According to sources, the Pats and Tavai have agreed to a lucrative three-year contract extension worth $15 million, with a maximum value of $21 million. The news was reported by NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo on Tuesday.
Tavai, coming off his best season as a professional, had an impressive performance in 2023, recording a career-high 110 tackles, two interceptions, and a sack in 17 games, including 16 starts. Previously signed to an extension in 2022, Tavai was set to earn $1.265 million in the final year of his previous contract. However, with the new deal, the 27-year-old linebacker will remain under contract with the Patriots through the 2027 season.
Jahlani Tavai's journey to New England hasn't been without its challenges. Previously a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in 2019, Tavai initially struggled in his first two seasons, starting 16 games before being released by the team ahead of the 2021 season. However, fate smiled upon him as he landed on the Patriots' practice squad, where he quickly caught the attention of former Lions head coach Matt Patricia, who had returned to New England after being fired in Detroit. Tavai was soon promoted to the active roster, and his role and production steadily improved in Foxborough.
The extension for Tavai continues the Patriots' ongoing trend of securing their in-house talent this offseason. Notable players who have recently inked new deals with the team include running back Rhamondre Stevenson, center David Andrews, offensive tackle Mike Onwenu, edge rusher Josh Uche, defensive tackle Christian Barmore, safety Kyle Dugger, and tight end Hunter Henry, among others.
With the inclusion of Jahlani Tavai in the list of recently extended Patriots, it is clear that the organization values his contributions to the team. The linebacker's strong performance in the previous season and his potential for further growth make him a valuable asset for New England's defense going forward.
