In response to reports of severe burns and cuts, Nestlé has initiated a recall of more than 440,000 Starbucks mugs that were recently sold. The mugs, manufactured by Nestlé USA and included in a 2023 holiday Starbucks-branded gift set, were sold online and at various retail outlets, including Target, Walmart, and Nexcom.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the ceramic mugs with metallic coating were available in two sizes, 11 and 16 ounces, and were sold from November 2023 through January 2024 at prices ranging from $10 to $20, depending on the gift set.

Nestlé stated that it became aware of the issue when consumers contacted the company regarding problems with the mugs. Taking immediate action, Nestlé is closely collaborating with the CPSC in order to address the concerns raised by customers.

"The quality, safety, and integrity of Nestlé USA products remain our number one priority. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action represents to both our consumers and retail customers," Nestlé stated in an online statement.

The recall is specifically limited to the holiday mugs and does not include any other Nestlé USA or Starbucks-branded products. According to the CPSC, the mugs pose a risk of burns, cuts, or other hazards if microwaved or filled with hot liquids.

As of Thursday, there have been a total of 12 reports related to the mugs overheating or breaking, resulting in 10 injuries. Out of these injuries, nine cases involved severe burns and blisters on consumers' fingers or hands, while one case involved a cut on a person's finger. One injury required medical attention, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.

The CPSC is urging consumers to immediately cease using the mugs and return them to the respective points of purchase for a full refund in cash or a gift card. Alternatively, full refunds can also be obtained through Nestlé's website.

With consumer safety as a top priority, Nestlé is taking proactive measures to address this issue promptly. By initiating the recall and working closely with the CPSC, the company aims to resolve the matter swiftly and ensure the well-being of its consumers and retail partners.
