In a scintillating display of skill and determination, Nelly Korda, the world's No. 1-ranked player, shot a brilliant 7-under 65 on Saturday to secure a two-stroke lead over Hannah Green at the Mizuho Americas Open. Korda now stands on the verge of another victory, aiming to claim her sixth win in the past seven events on the LPGA Tour.
Korda, known for her relentless approach to the game, spoke of her unwavering commitment to giving her all on the course. Drawing inspiration from legendary athletes like Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, she looks to embody the grace and tenacity they exemplify in their respective sports.
After losing her record-tying streak of five consecutive wins at the Cognizant Founders Cup last week to Rose Zhang, Korda has displayed exceptional improvement in each round of the Mizuho Americas Open. With scores of 70, 68, and now 65, she has amassed a remarkable three-round total of 13-under 203 at the scenic Liberty National golf course.
Not to be outdone, Hannah Green, the only other multiple winner on tour this year, produced an exceptional performance, firing an event-record 63. With this impressive round, Green made a significant move up the leaderboard, setting herself up as the closest pursuer to Korda.
Korda and Green, who currently hold the top two spots in the Rolex Player of the Year standings, will form the final pairing on Sunday against the backdrop of the iconic New York City skyline, the serene Hudson River, and the majestic Statue of Liberty.
In their third round, both players showcased tremendous consistency, recording a combined 16 birdies without a single bogey. Korda's surge to the lead came with a birdie on the 15th hole, narrowly missing an eagle on the driveable 16th. Although she couldn't convert her birdie opportunities on the final two holes, Korda remained focused on taking it one shot at a time amidst increasingly challenging weather conditions.
Meanwhile, defending champion Rose Zhang was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to illness, joining six other players who also had to withdraw. Illness has affected several participants over the first two days of play.
Rookie Gabriela Ruffels of Australia, who impressed with a third-place finish last week, finds herself tied for third at 10 under alongside Ayaka Furue of Japan, who carded a birdie on the final hole.
Notable contenders at 9 under include Jennifer Kupcho, who narrowly lost in a playoff to Zhang last year, Sophia Popov of Germany, and Pajaree Anannarukarn of the Philippines. Kupcho and Popov shot 67s, one stroke better than Anannarukarn.
The leaderboard features a sizable group at 8 under, including first-round leader So Mi Lee, the South Korean alternate who gained entry into the event just an hour before her tee time.
However, third-round leader Atthaya Thitikul, still recovering from a thumb injury, struggled with a 74 and finds herself in a group at 7 under, six shots adrift of Korda's lead.
Green, despite missing a couple of fairways, hit 17 greens, displaying remarkable accuracy and positioning herself comfortably for the final round. She expresses her satisfaction with avoiding the stress of scrambling for pars and is excited to compete for victory on Sunday.
With the stage set for a thrilling final round, all eyes will be on Nelly Korda and Hannah Green as they battle for the prestigious title of the Mizuho Americas Open. As Korda's dominance continues, Green aims to push for a top-five spot in the world rankings. Golf enthusiasts can expect a nerve-wracking climax to an exhilarating tournament against the picturesque backdrop of Liberty National.
