In what appears to be a repeat of 2021, T.J. Watt is once again holding out in terms of on-field participation during the Steelers' training camp while awaiting a new contract extension. Although Watt is present at the camp to avoid penalty fines, he is refraining from taking part in actual field activities to minimize the risk of injury. Back in 2021, this strategy paid off when Watt secured a four-year, $112 million extension just three days before the beginning of the season.

Recent reports from Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette indicate that extensive discussions are still ongoing between Watt's representatives and the Steelers' management. While there's an optimism that an agreement will be reached before the regular season starts, Dulac notes that negotiations may encounter significant hurdles.

The Steelers have historically adhered to a club policy that ceases all contract talks once the season is in progress, giving both parties a three-month window to finalize terms. Watt is anticipated to secure a deal exceeding the four-year, $160 million extension given to Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns. A distinguished defensive player, Watt has led the league in sacks in three of the past five seasons and equaled the NFL’s single-season record of 22.5 sacks in 2021. His accolades include seven Pro Bowl selections and four All-Pro honors.

As the clock ticks down to the start of the season, all eyes will be on Pittsburgh to see if Watt and the Steelers can negotiate a deal that meets his expectations and keeps the star edge rusher content for the foreseeable future.
