A recent CNN report revealed that a Napa Valley winery employee, Stan Brody from Acumen Wines, shared details of District Attorney Fani Willis paying cash during a visit with special prosecutor Nathan Wade. According to Brody, Willis surprised him by paying about $400 in cash for two bottles of wine and a wine-tasting tour early in 2023, instead of the usual credit card payment method.
Willis and Wade had acknowledged their romantic relationship during a hearing in Fulton County Superior Court, disclosing that they split the costs evenly during their travels to various locations like Napa Valley, Aruba, and Belize. Bank records from Wade's divorce proceedings showed expenses, such as $817 for flights to San Francisco and $840 for a stay at the DoubleTree hotel in Napa Valley, which were linked to their trips.
The revelations came as a response to motions filed by defendants seeking to disqualify Willis and her office from prosecuting the Trump election interference case. The defense raised concerns about financial benefits received by Willis from her relationship with Wade, who reportedly used funds earned from overseeing the case to cover travel expenses.
While Willis and Wade could not provide documentation for the cash reimbursements mentioned, Brody's account aligned with Willis' testimony that she often paid for activities like wine tours in cash while traveling. The narrative was further supported by Willis' assertion that she carries large sums of cash based on her father's advice.
Spokespersons for Willis and Wade declined to comment on the matter. Ashleigh Merchant, representing defendant Michael Roman, highlighted the importance of the disclosed relationship and expressed readiness to address the issues with the court.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the developing details shed light on the intertwined personal and financial aspects involving key figures in the high-profile case.
