In a tragic incident over the weekend, two brothers from El Dorado County were viciously attacked by a mountain lion. The victims have been identified as Taylen Brooks, 21, and Wyatt Brooks, 18, residents of the Mount Aukum community.

According to a statement released by the family through the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, the attack occurred while the brothers were engaging in shed hunting, a common activity in which individuals search for deer antlers in the wild. The attack took place in a remote area southeast of Georgetown, approximately 55 miles northeast of Sacramento.

Tragically, Taylen Brooks lost his life in the encounter with the mountain lion on Saturday afternoon. His brother Wyatt, however, survived the attack but sustained severe injuries. Wyatt has undergone multiple surgeries and is currently in recovery. The family expressed their devastation at the loss of Taylen and their gratitude that Wyatt is still with them, acknowledging that the outcome could have been even more tragic.

The Brooks brothers were known for their love of the outdoors, sharing a passion for hunting, fishing, and spending time in nature. Taylen worked alongside his father, participating in painting houses and cutting firewood. He was also a talented guitar player. Wyatt, on the other hand, had been enrolled in the Mt. Adams Fire Academy since September 2023, with aspirations to work with CAL FIRE.

In response to this unimaginable tragedy, the family has set up the Brooks Brothers Support Fund. Donations to the fund will assist the family in covering funeral services for Taylen and supporting Wyatt's recovery.

Following the attack, authorities from El Dorado County and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife took swift action. Later that night, they successfully located and euthanized a mountain lion in the vicinity. Subsequent examinations confirmed that this was indeed the same animal responsible for the attack on the Brooks brothers.

The community of El Dorado County, deeply saddened by this devastating incident, is rallying together to support the grieving Brooks family. As investigations continue, residents are urged to remain cautious when venturing into wilderness areas, particularly in the presence of wildlife.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with outdoor activities and the importance of vigilance when encountering wild animals. The Brooks family will forever carry the scars of this tragic event, and the community stands united in extending their condolences and support during this difficult time.
