The race, which showcased the Cybertruck towing another Porsche 911, raised eyebrows among automotive enthusiasts due to its seemingly improbable outcome.
Upon closer examination, YouTubers and experts doubted the authenticity of Tesla's claims, prompting MotorTrend to recreate the race using similar vehicles and circumstances. They procured two 911 Carrera Ts, known for their slower performance, borrowed an 845 horsepower Cybertruck from the Out of Spec Reviews YouTube channel, and even secured the exact Futura Club Sport aluminum trailer featured in Tesla's promotional video.
After six quarter-mile drag races, the results were striking. In the initial heat, the Porsche completed the race in 12.5 seconds at 115.6 mph, while the Cybertruck finished in 12.7 seconds at 105.2 mph. Subsequent runs witnessed the Porsche driver improving their launch technique, with the 911 reducing its time by 0.3 seconds. The Cybertruck managed to achieve a slightly faster time in one instance, but it was a negligible improvement of merely 0.02 seconds.
Even cherry-picking the best times for the Cybertruck and the slowest times for the Porsche, the Porsche still triumphed, finishing 0.229 seconds ahead of the Cybertruck. These findings, backed by factual timeslips from Famoso Dragstrip, refute Tesla's claims and provide concrete evidence that the Cybertruck falls short of the regular 911 Carrera T's performance on a dragstrip.
Moreover, it was revealed that Tesla only captured an eighth-mile race in their video, which was later confirmed by Cybertruck's lead engineer, Wes Morrill. Musk's original quarter-mile claim was not fulfilled due to safety concerns and limitations with the trailer's tires. Morrill also disputed Tesla's video not displaying the Cybertruck's fastest run, further casting doubt on the authenticity of the race.
MotorTrend's rigorous examination extended to weighing the drivers, vehicles, and trailer, ensuring fairness. They also utilized VBox data loggers, which consistently demonstrated that the 911 Carrera T outperformed the Cybertruck in all aspects.
While it is true that the Cybertruck initially displayed superior acceleration off the line, the Porsche quickly surpassed it after a mere seven feet, proving its dominance on the track. Ultimately, MotorTrend's comprehensive analysis points to the Cybertruck's inability to match the performance of a regular 911 Carrera T, debunking Tesla's claims of a victorious drag race.
The findings from MotorTrend's investigation leave no room for doubt - Tesla's Cybertruck drag race against the Porsche 911 was indeed a concocted display meant to captivate audiences. This revelation raises questions about the authenticity of promotional materials released by Tesla, reminding consumers to approach such claims with skepticism in the future.
