In a disturbing incident, passengers aboard a Delta Air Lines flight became ill after consuming food contaminated with black mold, sources revealed on Wednesday. The unsettling discovery forced an emergency landing in New York City, leaving at least 24 people feeling unwell.
The affected flight, Amsterdam-bound Flight 136, touched down at JFK Airport shortly after 3 a.m. EMS personnel treated two dozen passengers for symptoms related to the mold-infested meal, although no one required hospitalization. Initial reports suggested that 70 people had fallen ill, but it was later clarified by airport authorities that only 24 passengers were affected.
Flight data indicated that the plane, originally from Detroit, had already made its way to Newfoundland before the seriousness of the situation necessitated a return to JFK Airport. The specific item of food responsible for the contamination remains unknown. Delta, however, released a statement confirming that "reports that a portion of the Main Cabin in-flight meal service were spoiled" were accurate.
All 277 passengers on the flight were provided with hotel accommodations for the night, ensuring their comfort and well-being. Nonetheless, one passenger, identified as Virginia, expressed dissatisfaction, insisting that hotel and food vouchers were not a sufficient solution. In response, Delta requested Virginia to message them privately to address her concerns. Subsequently, Virginia provided an update, stating that she had been booked on a new flight scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Delta issued an apology following the incident, acknowledging the lapse in service. A spokesperson for the airline expressed regret, saying, "This is not the service Delta is known for, and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travels."
As investigations into the incident continue, passengers affected by the mold-contaminated meal on Flight 136 eagerly await answers and hope for improved conditions on their upcoming journey to Amsterdam.
