Infielder David Fletcher, currently playing at Triple A Gwinnett, may face investigation by Major League Baseball (MLB) officials following revelations of his involvement with a Southern California bookmaking operation, according to a report by ESPN's Tisha Thompson. Fletcher, known as one of Shohei Ohtani's closest friends, has been implicated in placing bets with a bookmaker operated by Mathew Bowyer.
The report also discloses that Ippei Mizuhara, Ohtani's interpreter, engaged in betting activities with Bowyer and has been charged with embezzling a significant sum from Ohtani. Furthermore, Fletcher's acquaintance, Colby Schultz, placed wagers on baseball games, including some in which Fletcher himself played while with the Angels.
Multiple sources mentioned in the report assert that Fletcher placed bets on various sports, but notably not on baseball. While MLB players are allowed to bet on other sports, doing so with illegal bookmakers is strictly prohibited. This particular aspect of Fletcher's involvement is most likely to attract attention from the league, prompting a potential investigation.
Fletcher was traded to the Atlanta Braves in December and is currently under contract until 2025, with club options for both 2026 and 2027. Previously ousted from the 40-man roster twice, he recently made five appearances during Ozzie Albies' absence due to a fractured toe, registering two hits in eight plate appearances. The Angels traded Luis Guillorme to the Braves last week, initially hinting at a possible opening for Fletcher on the roster. However, the Braves ultimately acquired Zack Short from the Red Sox and added him to the active roster instead.
Having participated in 28 games at Gwinnett, Fletcher has contributed with a 58 wRC+ during 124 plate appearances. This recent revelation, however, has cast a shadow over his future as MLB officials prepare to investigate his involvement with the bookmaking operation.
The MLB is committed to maintaining the integrity of the game and will thoroughly investigate any allegations or links to illegal gambling activities. Fletcher's association with a bookmaker, even if not involving bets on baseball, could potentially have serious consequences for his career in professional baseball.
