In a tragic incident, a 25-year-old man from Missouri has been charged with shooting and killing his mother as she attempted to enter the back door of their home. The horrifying incident took place in the early hours of Thursday morning in Olivette, a suburb of St. Louis.
According to William Goldstein, the attorney representing the accused, Jaylen Johnson mistook his mother for an intruder when she tried to enter their residence around 7:30 a.m. Johnson's immediate reaction was to defend the home, believing an unknown trespasser was attempting to gain entry.
Despite the efforts of Johnson's girlfriend, who tried to assist his mother after the shooting, 56-year-old Monica McNichols-Johnson tragically succumbed to her injuries within the household.
According to police reports, Johnson wasted no time in alerting emergency services, immediately making a distress call to 911 after the incident. Goldstein, the defendant's attorney, shared that Johnson has been overwhelmed with grief and has been inconsolable ever since the tragic event occurred.
Charges have since been filed against Johnson, who is facing charges of manslaughter and armed criminal action. Bail has been set at $100,000. It is worth noting that Johnson is a former college football player, employed, and does not have a previous criminal record. Goldstein revealed that Johnson had acquired a firearm for personal protection following a previous traumatic incident where he was robbed at gunpoint.
The local community has been left shaken by the unimaginable tragedy, as friends and neighbors express their condolences to the grieving family. Legal proceedings are set to take place as investigators seek to uncover more details surrounding the incident and ascertain the exact circumstances leading up to the fatal shooting.
As the story unfolds, the community waits anxiously for justice and for answers to the question of how such a tragic mistake occurred in a place that should be a safe haven for any family.
