### Minnesota Vikings Rookie QB J.J. McCarthy Undergoes Second Knee Surgery
EAGAN, Minn. -- J.J. McCarthy, rookie quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, has had a second operation on his right knee earlier this week as part of his recovery from a torn meniscus, a source confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday. The recent medical procedure was a biologic injection meant to address swelling that arose following increased rehabilitation activity.
"With the time we have, we just wanted to ensure there was no cause for concern," said Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell. He added that the reports from the medical team were very positive and that McCarthy’s recovery timeline remains unchanged, aiming for a return in the 2025 season.
McCarthy, who was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft, sustained the injury during his preseason debut on August 10, which ended his season prematurely. His initial surgery took place on August 14, after which he spent around six weeks with his leg immobilized. On September 6, McCarthy expressed his shock at learning the injury would sideline him for his entire rookie year, though neither he nor the team could identify the exact moment the injury happened.
Despite being out, McCarthy has stayed engaged by participating in team meetings and watching games from the sideline. In a statement from September, he mentioned that his current focus is on understanding the weekly preparations required for games, emphasizing that he wants to be thoroughly ready for when he eventually gets to play.
Meanwhile, veteran quarterback Sam Darnold has been starting for the Vikings, playing under a one-year, $10 million contract. O'Connell indicated during training camp in August that McCarthy had shown enough potential to be considered the team's future franchise quarterback, positioning him as a favorite to start the 2025 season.
This continued engagement and positive recovery outlook leave the Vikings hopeful for McCarthy’s future contributions to the team once he fully recovers.
